Use Your Favourite Image Editor.

Photoshop is the most common image editor used by professional photographers and utilising Photoshop means you don’t need to learn to use any new programs. In fact you don’t even need the latest version of Photoshop. The templates and album design techniques can be used successfully with Photoshop 7, CS, CS2, CS3 and CS4.

These 300DPI high resolution PSD files contain a background layer, safety guidelines and a variety of placeholders allowing you to create amazing layouts.

Photoshop Elements

The templates and techniques also work in Photoshop Elements 6 and 7. There is one small shortcut difference but I’ve created a movie that shows exactly how the templates work in Elements.

Traditional Templates

Digital albums come in two main types these days. Traditional slip-in style albums require a full print which is just slipped into the album. For this you need to print one side at a time. So for an 8×10 album the left and right sides of a layout would be individual 8×10 prints. For this we have created packs of 8×10, 8×12 and 10×10 slip-in templates. The 8×10 and 8×12 templates work in both portrait and landscape formats. The 10×10 square templates can also be rotated 90 or 180 degrees to create extra designs.

Modern Coffee-Table Flush Templates

The second style of album is the Modern Coffee-Table Flush book or magazine style album. These albums usually require full spread layouts to be created. So I designed full spread layouts that cover both left and right sides.

As an example an 8×10 portrait flush album would need two 8×10 layouts side by side using a 16(w) x 10(h) template. So that’s what you get; Full spread (double side) templates for each album size in portrait, landscape and square formats.

Splitting Layouts

I mentioned earlier how most album companies require you to send them both sides of a layout as one file. So a 24 page 8×10 portrait album would actually require 12 16×10 layouts. However some album companies ask you to send the left and right pages of a spread as separate files. To make life easier I have created 2 movies that show exactly how to create a splitter action and droplet.

What this does, is it allows you to create your album with full spread layouts (which is by far the easiest way) and then use Photoshop to split those layouts into left and right sides for you to upload to your album company if they need it done this way. This splitter droplet technique will save you a lot of time if split layouts are required!

Half of the battle with efficient album design is setting up an efficient workflow. This workflow is what will enable you to create albums so fast.
